We get it. Staying in shape can be hard. Especially in New Orleans where there is mouth-watering, greasy food all around you – all the time. Not only that, many run of the mill gyms can get boring and monotonous leaving us bored and wanting to change things up. That’s why we decided to write about some of our favorite NOLA gyms that add that extra layer of fun and excitement to our workouts!
Located in Uptown New Orleans on Magazine Street, Romney Studios is a boutique studio focused on improving the body & mind through fun and innovative workouts. This beautiful, 3 story upscale health and wellness center delivers many different workout classes that build and strengthen the body from the inside out. Whether you love group cycling, need a custom Pilates session, want an energizing Megaformer class, full body sculpting Barre experience or a high intensity boxing workout, their programs will keep you balanced, motivated and challenged. The instructors are all super knowledgeable and passionate about what they do and are very hands on in pushing and encouraging you every step of the way.
Cypress Fitness in the Lower Garden District specializes in group fitness and personal training using body weight, kettlebells, dumbbells,TRX, cardio training, and more. The space is a converted warehouse (insulated with A/C) that’s divided into a main class section with a padded floor, and perimeter space for working out, stretching, or whatever while a class is going on. The space itself is a nice size, not too cramped but also not cavernous.
All of the instructors are crazy fit but also not intimidating. Their level of professionalism and friendliness will keep you coming back. During class, they’ll happily offer alternatives to exercise that can increase or reduce difficulty that will keep you challenged regardless of your fitness level. The classes are hard but we’ve never once regretted finishing one!
Located in the heart of the St. Claude corridor, New Orleans Boulder Lounge is NOLA’s premier bouldering gym. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing, but instead of being harnessed into a pulley and climbing really tall walls, you are doing free (no harness) climbing on shorter walls. To account for all levels of bouldering ability, the different climbing paths are color-coded to let you know which walls are for beginners, which are for intermediate climbers and which ones are for experts. The best part of this gym is it doesnt even feel like you’re actually exercising, but it is in fact a whole body workout – with an exceptional focus on your forearms.
This is the third oldest fitness center in the country and one of the coolest gyms we’ve ever been to. It’s an old gentleman’s club built in the early 1900s and still houses a full bar right in the center – you can have your work out and then wind down with a martini! The group classes take place in a beautiful ballroom with 18’ tall windows, there is a pool, boxing ring, and several workout rooms with machines and free weights. We haven’t experienced it ourselves, but some say it’s haunted.
These are just some of our favorite spots to work out throughout the city. There are so many other awesome spots to get in some exercise in New Orleans, such as Crescent and Audubon Parks!
